Product details

Toruńska Gingerbread Liqueur is a Polish spiced liqueur from the Toruńska range that tastes of home-baked gingerbread, at 32% ABV in a 50cl stoneware bottle with a cork. Released as a limited series under the name Piernikowy Trunek, it comes in an old-style stoneware flask rather than ordinary glass. Its deep, spicy flavour comes from several macerates of the spices used to bake pierniki, the honey gingerbread for which Toruń is famous. Sweet baking spice leads, with honey and citrus peel behind. It suits anyone who loves Christmas spice and the smell of a kitchen in December.

Toruńska Gingerbread Liqueur tasting notes

  • Nose: Honey cake, cinnamon, clove and a touch of orange peel.
  • Palate: Warm baking spice and honeyed sweetness, like a soft piernik.
  • Finish: Long and spicy, with lingering clove and cinnamon.

How to drink Toruńska Gingerbread Liqueur

Serve it at room temperature or lightly chilled in a small glass, with coffee and a plate of gingerbread biscuits. It belongs on the Christmas table from Advent through to Epiphany, and pairs well with makowiec, mince pies or a slice of chocolate-glazed piernik. A glass by the fire on a December evening shows off the spice best.

Gingerbread liqueur in coffee and cocktails

  • Gingerbread Latte: stir 40 ml Toruńska Gingerbread Liqueur into 160 ml hot milky coffee in a mug and top with whipped cream and a pinch of cinnamon.
  • Spiced Apple Warmer: 40 ml of the liqueur in a heatproof glass with 150 ml hot cloudy apple juice and a slice of orange.

How it compares

Toruńska Gingerbread Vodka Liqueur shares the gingerbread theme and the 32% strength but comes in a standard glass bottle, so this Polish gingerbread liqueur in a stoneware bottle is the one to pick as a present. For a fruit-led winter drink, Toruńska Cherry or Toruńska Quince offer a fresher alternative to the spice.

Good to know

The Toruńska Gingerbread Liqueur 50cl flask looks the part under a Christmas tree and is worth keeping once empty. It is a Polish liqueur made in a limited series, so stock comes and goes. When available, Wodka Company dispatches Toruńska Gingerbread Liqueur from London to UK addresses.

Po polsku

Piernikowy Trunek z linii Toruńska to limitowana edycja likieru korzennego o mocy 32%, rozlewana do starodawnej kamionkowej butelki 0,5 l z korkiem. Za jego charakter odpowiada ponad tuzin maceratów z przypraw piernikowych, tych samych, które trafiają do toruńskich wypieków. W aromacie czuć miodownik, cynamon, goździki i odrobinę skórki pomarańczy. Można podać go w temperaturze pokojowej lub lekko schłodzony, do kawy i pierników. Dzięki ozdobnej butelce dobrze sprawdza się jako prezent.

Frequently asked questions

What does Piernikowy Trunek mean?

Piernik is Polish for gingerbread and trunek is an old-fashioned word for a drink, so Toruńska Gingerbread Liqueur is literally a “gingerbread drink”. The name suits its old-style stoneware bottle.

Why is Toruńska Gingerbread Liqueur linked to Toruń?

Toruń has been famous for its gingerbread, toruński piernik, since the Middle Ages, and the city still has a gingerbread museum. Toruńska Gingerbread Liqueur draws on that baking tradition by using the spices that go into the cake.

Can you drink Toruńska Gingerbread Liqueur warm?

Yes, Toruńska Gingerbread Liqueur works well in hot drinks: stir 30 ml into 150 ml warm cloudy apple juice with a slice of orange, or add it to a glass of mulled wine. Avoid boiling it, which dulls the spices.
