Product details

Apis Trójniak Staropolski Tradycyjny is a traditional Polish mead at 13% ABV in a 50cl stoneware bottle, made from one part honey to two parts water. That higher share of water makes the trójniak the lightest honey wine in the Apis range, with a drier, fresher profile than the dwójniak and półtorak styles. The words Staropolski Tradycyjny mean 'Old Polish traditional', a nod to a style of mead-making with centuries of history in Poland. Because it is less sweet, it is a good mead to drink with food rather than only after it.

Trójniak Staropolski tasting notes

  • Aroma: Light honey, meadow flowers and a hint of baked apple.
  • Taste: Medium-bodied and less sweet than a dwójniak, with clean honey, gentle acidity and a faint yeasty depth.
  • Finish: Fresh and fairly short, leaving soft honey and a crisp edge.

How to drink trójniak

Chill it to 8–10°C and serve it in a white-wine glass, as you would an off-dry white wine, or warm it gently on a cold night. It pairs with roast chicken, pierogi ruskie (potato and cheese dumplings) and soft cheeses, and its lighter body suits a long family lunch where a sweeter mead would tire the palate.

Mixing Trójniak Staropolski

  • Mead Highball: 75 ml Trójniak over ice in a tall glass, topped with 100 ml ginger ale and a wedge of lime.
  • Honey Garden Spritz: 60 ml Trójniak Staropolski and 60 ml soda water over ice in a wine glass, with a few thin cucumber slices.

How it compares

At 13% ABV and with more water in the wort, Trójniak is lighter and less sweet than the 16% Dwójniak Dominikański, and far less dense than Półtorak Jadwiga. Grzaniec Galicyjski Honey is a different thing again: a spiced wine flavoured with honey, whereas Trójniak is fermented from honey itself.

Good to know

For anyone new to the category, a traditional Polish mead at 13% is an easy place to start, and the stoneware bottle looks the part on a dinner table. Wodka Company ships Apis Trójniak Staropolski Tradycyjny 50cl to homes across the UK from London.

Dobrze smakuje schłodzony do 8–10°C, w kieliszku do białego wina, do pieczonego kurczaka lub pierogów ruskich.

Frequently asked questions

What does 'trójniak' mean in Apis Trójniak Staropolski Tradycyjny?

Trójniak comes from trzy, Polish for 'three'. In Apis Trójniak Staropolski Tradycyjny the wort counts three parts in total, one of honey to two of water, which is why this mead is lighter than a dwójniak or a półtorak.

Is Apis Trójniak Staropolski Tradycyjny a dry mead?

No, not fully dry. Apis Trójniak Staropolski Tradycyjny is the least sweet of the Apis meads in our range, yet it still tastes clearly of honey; think of it as medium rather than bone-dry, with a crisp, fresh edge.

Is Apis Trójniak a good first mead to try?

Yes. Apis Trójniak Staropolski Tradycyjny is the lightest and least sweet mead in the range, so it is an easy introduction to the style. Serve it chilled with a meal, then try a richer mead such as Apis Dwójniak Dominikański if you want more honey intensity.
