Product details

Apis Dwójniak Dominikański is a spiced Polish mead from Apis, made from nectar honey and water and bottled at 16% ABV in a 50cl ceramic bottle. As a dwójniak, it is fermented from equal volumes of honey and water, seasoned with its own spice blend and then left to mature for several years. The long rest builds a deep, rounded honey wine in which spice frames the honey rather than hiding it. Poles call mead miód pitny, literally 'drinkable honey', and this bottle suits anyone curious about the style or looking for a warming glass after dinner.

Apis Dwójniak Dominikański tasting notes

  • Aroma: Nectar honey and beeswax come first, wrapped in a soft haze of warm baking spice.
  • Taste: Mild, rounded and sweet, with honeycomb carried by gentle spice and a light, wine-like acidity that stops it cloying.
  • Finish: Long and honeyed, ending on a faint peppery glow.

In the glass it shows a deep golden colour and a smooth, slightly weighty texture.

How to drink Apis Dwójniak Dominikański

Pour 75–100 ml at room temperature into a small wine glass, or warm it gently in a pan to around 50°C without letting it boil, so the honey aroma stays intact. Smoked cheese, roast duck and a slice of piernik, the Polish honey gingerbread, all sit well beside it. A warm glass is a good match for a cold winter evening or the cheese course of a Christmas dinner.

Warm serves with Dwójniak Dominikański

  • Dominican Toddy: heat 100 ml Dwójniak Dominikański with 20 ml fresh lemon juice, one clove and a strip of orange peel, then pour into a heatproof glass.
  • Mead and Apple Warmer: warm 100 ml Dwójniak Dominikański with 100 ml cloudy apple juice and a cinnamon stick, keeping it below a simmer.

How it compares

Within the Apis range, Dwójniak Kurpiowski keeps the same 1:1 honey-to-water base but adds tart blackcurrant juice, and Dwójniak Staropolski brings raspberry. Dominikański is the one to pick if you want spice and honey without a fruit accent, all at the same 16% ABV. Next to the richer Półtorak Jadwiga it feels less syrupy and a little drier.

Good to know

Apis is a Polish brand, and an Apis mead in a ceramic bottle makes a handsome present for someone who collects unusual drinks. Wodka Company sends Apis Dwójniak Dominikański 50cl to addresses across the UK from its London base. After opening, reseal the bottle and keep it somewhere cool and dark.

Po polsku

Apis Dwójniak Dominikański to korzenny miód pitny dwójniak o mocy 16%, zamknięty w ceramicznej butelce 0,5 l. Można go pić w temperaturze pokojowej albo podgrzać do około 50°C, pilnując, by nie zawrzał.

Frequently asked questions

Is Apis Dwójniak Dominikański sweet?

Yes, but only moderately. Apis Dwójniak Dominikański balances its honey with warm spice and a gentle acidity, so it tastes richer than a trójniak yet far less syrupy than a półtorak such as Apis Półtorak Jadwiga.

What does 'Dominikański' mean in Apis Dwójniak Dominikański?

Dominikański is the Polish adjective for 'Dominican', the word used for the Dominican order of friars. In Apis Dwójniak Dominikański it is paired with dwójniak, the name for a mead brewed from equal measures of honey and water.

Is Apis Dwójniak Dominikański a wine or a spirit?

Apis Dwójniak Dominikański is a mead, which makes it a honey wine rather than a spirit. Honey and water are fermented, not distilled, so this spiced mead is poured into a wine glass and sipped like a dessert or fortified wine.
