Product details

J.A. Baczewski Dry Gin 70cl is a dry gin with a potato base from J.A. Baczewski, the historic spirits house that began in Lwów, bottled at 43.5% ABV. Unusually, the base is triple-distilled potato spirit rather than grain. Juniper berries, orange peel, lemon, ginger, coriander and fennel are macerated in it, giving a rounded, citrus-and-spice potato gin with a soft texture. The brand recommends it as an aperitif with tonic or as the heart of a dry martini, and in Polish it is simply dżin.

J.A. Baczewski Dry Gin tasting notes

  • Nose: Juniper and orange peel, with fresh lemon and coriander seed.
  • Palate: Rounded and slightly oily from the potato base, with ginger warmth and sweet fennel.
  • Finish: Dry, aromatic and medium-long.

How to drink J.A. Baczewski Dry Gin

Serve it as an aperitif, well chilled. A balloon glass full of ice with tonic and a slice of orange is the easiest route, while a stirred martini shows off the soft potato texture. Green olives, salted almonds, smoked fish or pickled herring all suit it before dinner. It is a good bottle for a summer evening or for welcoming guests before a meal.

Gin cocktails

A J.A. Baczewski gin and tonic is the starting point, and a bittersweet classic follows.

  • Gin and Tonic: pour 50 ml into a balloon glass filled with ice, top with 150 ml tonic water and garnish with a slice of orange.
  • Negroni: stir 30 ml gin, 30 ml Campari and 30 ml sweet vermouth over ice in a tumbler and add a twist of orange peel.

How it compares

J.A. Baczewski Monopolowa Vodka is the same style of potato spirit without botanicals, so tasting the two side by side reveals exactly what juniper and spice add. J.A. Baczewski Suweren also features orange peel, but there citrus is the whole story, with no juniper. Compared with typical grain-based London dry gins, this one feels rounder and softer.

Good to know

J.A. Baczewski traces its roots to a distillery opened on the outskirts of Lwów in 1782. The 70cl bottle makes a distinctive gift for gin lovers who think they have tried everything. Wodka Company ships J.A. Baczewski Dry Gin across the UK from our London base.

Po polsku

J.A. Warto podać go przed posiłkiem jako gin z tonikiem w kieliszku balonowym, z dużą ilością lodu i plasterkiem pomarańczy.

Frequently asked questions

What tonic goes with J.A. Baczewski Dry Gin?

A classic Indian tonic or a light Mediterranean tonic suits J.A. Baczewski Dry Gin, because both let its orange peel, coriander and ginger come through. Serve 50 ml over ice in a balloon glass, top with 150 ml tonic and garnish with an orange slice.

What is the difference between J.A. Baczewski Dry Gin and J.A. Baczewski Monopolowa?

J.A. Baczewski Monopolowa Vodka is the unflavoured potato spirit on its own, soft and lightly earthy. J.A. Baczewski Dry Gin takes a potato base and macerates juniper, citrus peel, ginger, coriander and fennel in it, so the gin is aromatic and spiced where the vodka is plain.

Can you make a martini with J.A. Baczewski Dry Gin?

Yes. J.A. Baczewski Dry Gin makes a rounded dry martini: stir 60 ml with 10 ml dry vermouth over ice, strain into a chilled glass and finish with an orange or lemon twist. The potato base gives the drink a softer, silkier feel than most grain gins.
