Product details
Chopin Vintage Young Potato 50cl is an oak-aged Polish potato spirit from Chopin, distilled once from young potatoes harvested in June 2013 and bottled at 42.7% ABV. Unlike Chopin's clear vodkas, it spent five years in new oak barrels, so it pours with colour and carries wood, spice and vanilla over an earthy potato base. As a single distilled potato spirit, it keeps more of the raw material's character than a vodka distilled several times. In Polish it would be described as leżakowany, meaning cask-rested, and it suits whisky and brandy drinkers curious about Polish spirits.
Vintage Young Potato tasting notes
- Nose: Vanilla, toasted oak and an earthy note of new potato.
- Palate: Rounded and slightly oily, with caramel, baking spice, gentle oak tannin and a savoury potato core.
- Finish: Long, dry and woody, with a hint of pepper.
Five years in new oak give it a warm golden colour, far removed from Chopin's crystal-clear bottlings.
How to drink Chopin Vintage Young Potato
Pour it neat at room temperature into a tulip or nosing glass, as you would an aged brandy, and give it a few minutes before the first sip. A drop of water opens the spice. Aged hard cheese, walnuts or a square of dark chocolate make good companions. It is a bottle for slow evenings and for comparing with whisky among friends who enjoy a tasting.
Cocktails with Chopin Vintage
A Chopin Vintage Young Potato Old Fashioned shows how the oak behaves with a touch of sweetness.
- Potato Old Fashioned: stir 50 ml with 5 ml sugar syrup and two dashes of Angostura bitters over a large ice cube, then express an orange peel over the top.
- Vintage Highball: pour 40 ml over ice in a highball, top with 120 ml chilled ginger ale and finish with a lemon twist.
How it compares
Chopin Potato Vodka starts from the same raw material but is clear, unaged and multiple-distilled, made for chilling, whereas the Vintage is a cask-matured sipper served at room temperature. For oak influence from malted barley instead, J.A. Baczewski Single Malt Whisky is richer in baking spice and sweeter on the nose.
Good to know
The young potatoes for this release were all lifted in June 2013, a single-harvest detail more common in wine than in spirits. The listing describes gift packaging, so the 50cl bottle is ready to hand over as a present for a collector. Wodka Company sends Chopin Vintage Young Potato across the UK from London whenever it is in stock.
Warto pić go w temperaturze pokojowej, w kieliszku typu tulipan, z dojrzałym twardym serem lub gorzką czekoladą.
Frequently asked questions
Is Chopin Vintage Young Potato a clear vodka?
No. Chopin Vintage Young Potato spent five years in new oak barrels, so it has colour and notes of vanilla, toasted oak, caramel and baking spice. In style it is much closer to a brown spirit than to the clear Chopin Potato Vodka.
Why is Chopin Vintage Young Potato distilled only once?
Chopin distils Vintage Young Potato a single time to keep more of the young potatoes' earthy, savoury character in the spirit before it goes into oak. Most clear vodkas are distilled several times to make them more neutral.
How should you drink Chopin Vintage Young Potato?
Drink Chopin Vintage Young Potato neat at room temperature from a tulip or nosing glass, as you would an aged brandy or whisky, rather than chilled. A firm aged cheese or a square of dark chocolate brings out its oak and spice.
