Product details

Amundsen Expedition Vodka is a Polish clear vodka bottled at 40% ABV in a 70cl bottle, named after the 1911 expedition led by Roald Amundsen that first reached the South Pole. Its heavy glass bottle is moulded to resemble a block of glacier ice, a fitting nod to the polar theme. In Polish terms it is a wódka czysta, an unflavoured vodka meant to be served chilled to around 0°C. Slow rectification and very clear water lie behind its delicate, clean style, which suits drinkers who prefer a crisp vodka to accompany food.

Amundsen Expedition tasting notes

  • Nose: Cool and restrained, with light cereal, a mineral edge and a whisper of white flowers.
  • Palate: Crisp and gently sweet, with soft grain, a touch of vanilla and a watery freshness.
  • Finish: Short to medium and clean, with mild pepper that fades quickly.

How to serve Amundsen Vodka

Put the bottle in the freezer for a few hours so it pours at about 0°C, then serve 30–40 ml portions in small chilled glasses. In Poland, ice-cold Polish vodka with zakąski is the classic serve: herring in oil, ogórki kiszone (fermented cucumbers), rye bread with smalec and cold cuts all work. It also belongs on the table at a Polish wedding or a family name-day dinner.

Amundsen Expedition Vodka cocktails

For longer drinks, keep the mixers simple so the clean spirit still shows.

  • Amundsen Tonic: pour 50 ml over plenty of ice in a highball, top with 150 ml tonic water and add a lime wedge.
  • Cranberry Highball: 50 ml over ice in a tall glass with 100 ml cranberry juice and 50 ml soda water, finished with an orange slice.

How it compares

Amundsen sits squarely in the classic Polish style: neutral, crisp and built for ice-cold serving alongside food. Altamura Vodka takes a different route, with ancient Italian wheat and a 43% strength giving a rounder, bread-like glass, whereas Amundsen is lighter and cleaner. Against a creamy potato spirit such as Chase Pure Plain Vodka, it also feels slimmer and more mineral.

Good to know

The ice-block bottle stands out on a shelf, so Amundsen Vodka makes a good present for anyone who enjoys polar history or Polish vodka. Wodka Company, a London importer of Polish spirits, dispatches Amundsen Expedition Vodka 70cl to customers throughout the UK.

Warto schłodzić ją w zamrażarce do około 0°C i podać w małych kieliszkach do śledzia w oleju, ogórków kiszonych i chleba ze smalcem.

Frequently asked questions

Is Amundsen Expedition Vodka Polish or Norwegian?

Amundsen Expedition Vodka is a Polish vodka, even though the explorer it honours, Roald Amundsen, was Norwegian. The name celebrates his 1911 South Pole expedition, while the liquid follows the clean, crisp style of Polish clear vodka.

What does Amundsen Expedition Vodka taste like?

Amundsen Expedition Vodka is cold and restrained, with light cereal, a mineral edge and a gentle sweetness on a crisp palate. A short, softly peppery finish makes Amundsen easy to sip ice-cold between bites of food.

What is the difference between Amundsen Expedition Vodka and Altamura Vodka?

Amundsen Expedition Vodka is a light, clean Polish vodka designed to be poured straight from the freezer. Altamura Vodka is an Italian wheat vodka with a rounder, bready body and a peppery finish, so it shows best at fridge temperature over a large ice cube.
