Product details

Smirnoff Red Plain Vodka 70cl, also labelled Smirnoff No. 21, is the classic red-label plain vodka from Smirnoff, triple distilled from a blend of grains and bottled at 37.5% ABV. After distillation it is filtered ten times through seven columns of charcoal, which gives a very clean, neutral spirit. That neutrality is the point: it lets tomato juice, ginger beer or tonic take the lead. The same triple distilled grain vodka forms the base of several Smirnoff flavoured vodkas. Wodka Company sends Smirnoff Red Plain Vodka out from London to customers all over the UK.

Smirnoff Red tasting notes

  • Nose: Clean and neutral, with a hint of grain and light citrus.
  • Palate: Light-bodied and crisp, with a soft, smooth texture.
  • Finish: Short, fresh and clean.

How to drink Smirnoff Red

Serve it chilled in small glasses or, more often, mixed over ice with your favourite partner. Ice-cold, it goes with pickled cucumbers, herring, salted crisps and other savoury snacks. It is the sort of bottle that earns its place at a big gathering, from a birthday buffet to a Boxing Day brunch, where guests mix their own drinks.

Smirnoff Red cocktails

  • Bloody Mary: 50 ml with 120 ml tomato juice, 15 ml lemon juice, 4 dashes of Worcestershire sauce, 2 dashes of hot sauce and a pinch each of celery salt and black pepper, stirred over ice in a tall glass.
  • Screwdriver: 50 ml over ice in a highball with 150 ml fresh orange juice.
  • Vodka Lime and Soda: 50 ml over ice with 15 ml lime cordial, topped with 120 ml soda water.

How it compares

Smirnoff Black is pot-distilled, bottled at 40% ABV and has more body, while Smirnoff Red is lighter and more neutral. Moskovskaya Osobaya, at 38% ABV, is a similar everyday clear vodka with a touch more weight. Skyy Premium, an American vodka at 40%, is equally clean and suits the same mixed drinks.

Good to know

Smirnoff is owned by Diageo, and the No. 21 name appears on the red label. The 70cl bottle is a practical size for parties and a sensible staple for any drinks cupboard.

Frequently asked questions

Is Smirnoff a Russian vodka?

No, Smirnoff Red is not made in Russia today. The brand was founded in Moscow by Pyotr Smirnov in the 19th century, but the family business moved west after the Russian Revolution, and Smirnoff now belongs to the British drinks group Diageo.

What mixer goes with Smirnoff Red?

Smirnoff Red is a neutral mixing vodka, so it goes with almost anything: cola, lemonade, tonic, orange juice, cranberry juice or ginger beer. A popular everyday serve is 50 ml over ice with 150 ml tonic water and a lime wedge.

What cocktails can I make with Smirnoff Red?

Smirnoff Red works in nearly every vodka classic, including the Moscow Mule, the Screwdriver, the Sea Breeze and the Bloody Mary. Its clean, light flavour stays in the background, letting juices, ginger beer or tomato carry the drink.

What is the difference between Smirnoff Red and Moskovskaya?

Smirnoff Red and Moskovskaya Osobaya Vodka are both everyday clear vodkas for mixing, but Moskovskaya keeps a little more grain character and a slightly oily texture. Smirnoff Red is lighter and more neutral after its tenfold charcoal filtration.
