Product details

Nikka Coffey Vodka is a Japanese vodka from Nikka Whisky, distilled from corn and barley in Coffey stills and bottled at 40% ABV in a 70cl bottle. The Coffey still is a 19th-century column still that Nikka also uses for its grain whisky, and it leaves more texture in the spirit than a modern rectifying column. White birch charcoal filtration then gives the finish its clean edge. Whisky drinkers curious about vodka, and anyone who enjoys Japanese food, tend to appreciate this creamy, citrus-led Coffey still vodka.

Nikka Coffey Vodka tasting notes

  • Nose: Lemon zest, grapefruit and a soft cereal sweetness.
  • Palate: Creamy and delicate, with citrus, light malt and a hint of vanilla.
  • Finish: Clean and crisp, with a faint charcoal dryness.

How to drink Nikka Coffey Vodka

Serve it chilled from the fridge, neat in a small glass or over one large ice cube, so the creamy texture is not dulled by extreme cold. It goes well with tempura, yakitori, fresh oysters and lightly dressed seafood. It also makes a refined aperitif before dinner, and the citrus notes suit a summer evening outdoors.

Nikka Coffey Vodka cocktails

  • Japanese Gimlet: 50 ml Nikka Coffey Vodka, 20 ml fresh lime juice and 10 ml sugar syrup, shaken with ice and strained into a chilled coupe.
  • Yuzu Vodka Soda: 45 ml vodka and 10 ml yuzu juice over ice in a highball glass, topped with 120 ml soda water.
  • Lemon Drop: 45 ml vodka, 20 ml fresh lemon juice and 15 ml triple sec shaken with ice and strained into a sugar-rimmed coupe.

How it compares

Haku Japanese Pure Plain Craft Vodka from Suntory is made only from rice and tastes rounder and more subtly sweet. As a vodka made from corn and barley, Nikka has a fuller, more citrus-forward body. X Muse Vodka from Scotland also uses barley but leans towards vanilla and sweet malt rather than citrus.

Good to know

Nikka is the Japanese whisky house founded by Masataka Taketsuru, and this vodka shares the Coffey stills used for the brand's grain whisky. Wodka Company ships Nikka Coffey Vodka 70cl to homes across the UK.

Frequently asked questions

Does Nikka Coffey Vodka taste of coffee?

No, the word “Coffey” refers to the Coffey still, a column still named after Aeneas Coffey, who patented the design in 1830. Nikka Coffey Vodka has no coffee in it and tastes of lemon zest, grapefruit and soft grain.

What is the difference between Nikka Coffey Vodka and X Muse Vodka?

Both use barley, but in different ways. Nikka Coffey Vodka combines corn and barley in Coffey stills and finishes with birch charcoal for a crisp, citrus-led style. X Muse Vodka from Scotland blends two separately distilled barleys and tastes maltier, with more vanilla.

What mixer goes with Nikka Coffey Vodka?

Soda water is the classic Japanese choice: build 40 ml Nikka Coffey Vodka over plenty of ice in a tall glass and top with 120 ml chilled soda and a twist of grapefruit peel. Premium tonic with a lemon wedge also suits its citrus character.
