Product details

J.A. Baczewski Suweren 70cl is an orange spirit from J.A. Baczewski, made on a distilled potato spirit base and bottled at 40% ABV. It recreates a pre-war orange peel recipe that was known well beyond Poland between the wars. Orange peel and mandarin lead the aroma, the finish is long and dry, and the hand-filled decanter carries a label modelled on the original interwar design. The name is the Polish word suweren, meaning sovereign, and it suits drinkers who like bitter-orange aperitifs more than sweet liqueurs.

Suweren tasting notes

  • Nose: Candied orange peel and fresh mandarin zest.
  • Palate: Dry and citrusy, with bitter orange pith over a soft, rounded potato-spirit body.
  • Finish: Long, dry and gently bitter.

How to drink J.A. Baczewski Suweren

Chill the decanter and serve Suweren neat in a small glass as an aperitif, or over a single large ice cube with a strip of orange zest. Rich dishes suit its bitter citrus: roast duck with orange, game terrine, smoked cheese or dark chocolate with candied peel. It makes a handsome bottle for a dinner party, set on the table before the starters arrive.

Cocktails with Suweren

Suweren and tonic is the simplest long drink, and the citrus also suits a lighter sparkling serve.

  • Orange Highball: pour 50 ml Suweren over ice in a highball, top with 150 ml tonic water and garnish with an orange wheel.
  • Suweren Spritz: build 40 ml Suweren, 75 ml dry prosecco and 40 ml soda water over ice in a wine glass with a slice of blood orange.

How it compares

J.A. Baczewski Dry Gin also uses orange peel, but alongside juniper, ginger and fennel, so it is more complex and herbal. J.A. Baczewski Hazelnut Orzechówka is sweeter and rounder, whereas Suweren stays dry and citrus-driven. Next to sweet orange liqueurs of the triple sec type, it is drier and more bitter.

Good to know

Each decanter is filled by hand, and its shape follows the bottle used before the war. The 70cl decanter makes a striking gift for anyone interested in Polish drinking history. Wodka Company sends J.A. Baczewski Suweren from our London shop to anywhere in the UK.

Po polsku

J.A. W nosie czuć kandyzowaną skórkę pomarańczy i mandarynkę, w ustach cytrusy z lekką goryczką skórki, a finisz jest długi i suchy. Warto podać ją schłodzoną jako aperitif albo z tonikiem, lodem i plasterkiem pomarańczy.

Frequently asked questions

What does Suweren mean?

Suweren is Polish for 'sovereign', the name of a J.A. Baczewski recipe that was known well beyond Poland between the wars. J.A. Baczewski Suweren recreates that orange-peel spirit today in a decanter modelled on the original.

Is J.A. Baczewski Suweren sweet?

No. J.A. Baczewski Suweren is dry and citrusy, with candied orange peel and mandarin on the nose and a gently bitter, pithy finish. For a sweeter, rounder Baczewski bottle, try J.A. Baczewski Hazelnut Orzechówka.

How do you serve J.A. Baczewski Suweren?

Pour J.A. Baczewski Suweren chilled and neat before a meal, or lengthen 50 ml with tonic water over ice and an orange wheel. Duck à l'orange, liver pâté or dark chocolate with candied peel all match its bitter-orange profile.
