Product details

Absolut Blue is the original Swedish vodka from Absolut, made from winter wheat and bottled at 40% ABV in a 70cl bottle. It is produced near the town of Åhus in southern Sweden, and the flavoured Absolut vodkas start from this same wheat spirit. On its own it shows what a Swedish winter wheat vodka tastes like: rounded, softly bready and slightly peppery rather than sharp. Bartenders use it as a dependable house pour, and at home it covers everything from a freezer-cold sip to a long highball. The Absolut Blue 70cl bottle ships from our London shop to any UK address.

Absolut Blue tasting notes

  • Nose: Clean grain with a little dried fruit and a faint bready warmth.
  • Palate: Medium-bodied and rounded, with soft wheat sweetness lifted by a light peppery note.
  • Finish: Dry and moderately long, with gentle spice fading slowly.

As a plain vodka it is colourless and unflavoured, so any fruit or herb character in a drink comes from whatever you mix with it.

How to serve Absolut Blue

For sipping, store it in the freezer and pour it into small chilled glasses alongside pickled herring, gherkins, smoked mackerel or a plate of cold meats. For a long drink, fill a highball with ice so the spirit stays cold and the mixer keeps its fizz. It works for relaxed weekend gatherings and for dinner parties where guests like to choose their own mixers.

Absolut Blue cocktails and mixers

  • Vodka Soda: 50 ml Absolut Blue in a tall glass packed with ice, topped with 150 ml soda water and a squeeze of fresh lime.
  • Black Russian: 50 ml Absolut Blue and 25 ml coffee liqueur stirred over ice in a rocks glass.
  • Vodka Cranberry: 40 ml Absolut Blue over ice with 120 ml cranberry juice and a lime wedge.

How it compares

As the original Absolut vodka, Blue is the neutral reference point for the rest of the family. Absolut Elyx, the premium plain bottling at 42.3%, has a silkier, weightier texture and is aimed at sipping. Absolut Citron uses the same wheat base but adds lemon and lime, so choose Blue when you want the spirit itself to stay in the background.

Good to know

The Absolut Company produces Absolut Blue in Sweden. Its familiar clear bottle makes it an easy choice to bring to a dinner, and the 70cl size is sensible for keeping a reliable plain vodka in the freezer for both sipping and mixing.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it called Absolut Blue?

Absolut Blue is the everyday name for the original unflavoured Absolut Vodka, taken from the blue lettering on its label. The name helps shoppers tell the classic bottle apart from flavoured versions such as Absolut Citron.

What does Absolut Blue taste like?

Absolut Blue has a rounded, medium-bodied wheat character, with notes of dried fruit and a peppery, lightly spiced finish. That gentle grain flavour gives Absolut Blue more personality neat than a fully neutral vodka while keeping it easy to mix.

What mixer goes with Absolut Blue?

Soda water with fresh lime is the cleanest partner for Absolut Blue, while tonic, ginger beer, cranberry juice and tomato juice all work too. Use roughly one part Absolut Blue to three parts mixer over plenty of ice.

Can you drink Absolut Blue neat?

Yes, Absolut Blue can be sipped neat and ice-cold, as the low temperature thickens the texture and softens the pepper. Serve small measures alongside salty food such as herring or Polish ogórki kiszone, the classic sour pickled cucumbers.
