Product details

J.A. Baczewski Whisky 70cl is a blended whisky from J.A. Baczewski, combining whiskies distilled from malted barley and other grains, bottled at 43% ABV. Maturation in oak barrels gives it an amber colour and a lightly sweet, delicate profile with a fair amount of spice. The large 1782 printed on the label marks the year the first Baczewski distillery opened on the edge of Lwów, the city now known as Lviv. In Polish it is a whisky mieszana, a blend, and it suits drinkers who want an easy, spicy dram that also mixes well.

J.A. Baczewski Whisky tasting notes

  • Nose: Honeyed grain, vanilla and light oak.
  • Palate: Gently sweet, with baking spice, toffee and a peppery lift.
  • Finish: Medium in length, warm with spice.

How to drink J.A. Baczewski Whisky

Try it neat in a tumbler first, then with a single ice cube to see how the toffee comes forward. Its spice holds up well with mixers, which makes it a sensible choice for long drinks. Grilled sausages, barbecued pork ribs, smoked oscypek or a mixed cheeseboard all match the sweet-and-spicy profile. It suits a relaxed weekend barbecue or a casual evening with friends.

Mixers and cocktails

J.A. Baczewski Whisky and ginger ale is the obvious long drink, but it has other uses too.

  • Ginger Highball: build 50 ml over plenty of ice in a tall glass, add 150 ml ginger ale and squeeze in a lemon wedge.
  • Whisky Sour: shake 50 ml whisky, 25 ml lemon juice and 15 ml sugar syrup hard with ice and strain over fresh ice in a tumbler.
  • Apple Whisky Highball: pour 50 ml over ice, top with 120 ml cloudy apple juice and add a cinnamon stick.

How it compares

J.A. Baczewski Single Malt Whisky is the richer, older sibling, aged eight years in red wine barrels and bottled at 45%. This one is lighter and more approachable, a blended whisky for highballs as much as for sipping. Compared with Chopin Vintage Young Potato, an oak-aged potato spirit, it is sweeter and less earthy.

Good to know

The Baczewski name was famous in pre-war Lwów, and the 1782 date ties this bottle to that history. A 70cl bottle is generous enough for a summer of highballs. Wodka Company delivers J.A. Baczewski Whisky anywhere in the UK, sent from our shop in London.

Po polsku

Liczba 1782 na etykiecie J.A. Baczewski Whisky przypomina rok otwarcia pierwszej wytwórni Baczewskiego na przedmieściach Lwowa. To whisky mieszana, łącząca destylaty ze słodu jęczmiennego i innych zbóż, o mocy 43% w butelce 0,7 l. Dojrzewanie w dębowych beczkach daje jej bursztynowy kolor i lekko słodki smak z nutą miodu, toffi i przypraw korzennych. Można ją pić czystą, z lodem albo w wysokiej szklance z ginger ale i cząstką cytryny.

What food goes with J.A. Baczewski Whisky?
