Product details

J.A. Baczewski Single Malt Whisky 70cl is an eight year old single malt from J.A. Baczewski, the historic house with roots in Lwów, matured in French red wine barrels and bottled at 45% ABV. The label, designed by Tomasz Lachowski, refers to the brand's pre-war whisky. The style is malty and generously spiced, with a light campfire smokiness that comes without peat. Polish whisky drinkers would describe it as słodowa, malt-based, and it suits anyone who enjoys wine-cask Scotch and wants a bottle with Central European heritage.

Single malt tasting notes

  • Nose: Intense caramel malt, vanilla and toffee, with allspice, a mineral touch and a wisp of wood smoke.
  • Palate: Toasted grain and raw oak, then dried apricot, plenty of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and gingerbread.
  • Finish: Gingerbread spice joined by vanilla and black pepper.

The red wine casks show more in the spice than in any obvious fruit, so the overall impression is warm and bakery-like.

How to drink J.A. Baczewski Single Malt

Pour it neat at room temperature into a nosing glass and let it rest for a few minutes. A splash of water softens the oak and brings the cinnamon forward. Aged cheese, dark chocolate or pierniki, Polish gingerbread, echo its spice. It suits a slow winter evening or the end of a Christmas dinner, and it rewards sipping over a long conversation.

Whisky cocktails

  • Rob Roy: stir 50 ml single malt, 25 ml sweet vermouth and two dashes of Angostura bitters over ice, strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with a cherry.
  • Gingerbread Old Fashioned: stir 50 ml whisky with 5 ml honey syrup and a dash of orange bitters over a large ice cube, then add a strip of orange peel.

How it compares

J.A. Baczewski Whisky is the brand's blended whisky, combining malt and other grains at 43%, lighter and better suited to highballs, while this is a richer sipping dram and a single malt aged in red wine barrels. Chopin Vintage Young Potato is another oak-aged spirit in our range, but it is distilled from potatoes and tastes earthier.

Good to know

J.A. Baczewski made whisky before the Second World War, and the label design nods to those bottles. The 70cl bottle makes a memorable present for a whisky collector. When it is back in stock, Wodka Company delivers J.A. Baczewski Single Malt Whisky across the UK from London.

Po polsku

J.A. Baczewski Single Malt Whisky to rocznikowa whisky słodowa o mocy 45% w butelce 0,7 l, dojrzewająca osiem lat w beczkach po francuskim czerwonym winie.

Frequently asked questions

Is J.A. Baczewski Single Malt Whisky peated?

How old is J.A. Baczewski Single Malt Whisky?

J.A. Baczewski Single Malt Whisky is aged for eight years in French red wine barrels, and each bottle states its vintage and batch number. The label, by designer Tomasz Lachowski, nods to the brand's pre-war whiskies.
